CORONAVIRUS ON LI: Nassau reports 2nd highest number of cases in country as totals surpass 60K

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The death toll on Long Island increased by less than 100 overnight with the total coronavirus cases surpassing 60,000.

Suffolk County reported 33 deaths for a total death toll of 959.


Nassau County reported 41 of those deaths executive Laura Curran reported on Friday during a briefing. 

The countywide fatalities are now at 1,471, Curran added.

The total number of cases in Nassau increased to 32,76. They now have the second-highest cases in the nation.

Curran added that there were 1,778 hospitalizations in the county, with numbers dropping 28 percent since the apex.

Out of every 100 residents that have been tested, 24 were positive, Curran said.

Curran announced she is expanding both testing and food distribution in the county's hardest-hit communities.Under the federal CARES Act, Nassau County will receive $102.9 million to cover COVID-19 expense only, but Curran says it's not enough."I'm concerned that this money we are getting is barely a life raft that is going to get us to high ground," said Curran. "We need more."
