NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The National Enquirer is up for sale.
The tabloid, which has been scrutinized for its coverage of Jeff Bezos' marriage, is looking to break off from owner American Media LLC because of pressure from the hedge fund that controls a large chunk of the company, the Washington Post reports.
Another point of concern is American Media chief David Pecker's cozy relationship with Donald Trump, which is responsible for American Media titles pulling negative stories about Trump.
American Media confirmed the report, telling Bloomberg it is exploring "strategic options" for the National Enquirer that "will likely result in their sale in the near future."
One person familiar with conversations at AMI told the Washington Post that the discussions were occurring "because they didn't want to deal with hassles like this anymore," referring to the Bezos controversy."
"The Trump thing was an issue, and [hedge fund head Anthony Melchioore] was really disgusted by the Bezos reporting," a source close to the discussions told the Post.
