LODI, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A three-week campaign against distracted drivers is about to begin in New Jersey which could lead to fines up to $400 for first-time offenders.
The “U Text. U Drive. U Pay” campaign, which started April 1 and extends to April 21, is timed to overlap with National Distracted Driving month.
Activities which police are looking for include eating and drinking while driving, adjusting your radio, combing your hair, checking your navigation equipment, or brushing your teeth.
Linden Lieutenant Chris Gunther said, “Cops are going to go out and they’re just going to look for people are their phones and they’re going to pull them over and they’re going to give them tickets.”
Half of the crashes in New Jersey are somehow linked to a distracted driver.
