NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An arrest has been made in connection with the murder of a 92-year-old Queens woman who was found in the street this week.The arrest happened shortly after police released new surveillance video Thursday of the suspect.
Police later identified the man as Reeaz Khan, 21, of Queens.
He's been charged with:
Murder 2nd Degree- Depraved IndifferenceMurder 2nd Degree- Felony MurderSex Abuse- Forcible CompulsionSex Abuse-Victim Physically Helpless
Khan was reportedly taken into police custody overnight at a homeless shelter.
Around midnight on Jan. 6, authorities discovered Maria Fuertes lying on the street unconscious and unresponsive in front of 127th Street in the Richmond Hill section.
Officials say the man approached Fuertes from behind, knocked her down and choked her. She was also sexually assaulted.
Fuertas she sustained trauma to her neck and back. She was taken to Jamaica Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison says an autopsy showed multiple injuries "demonstrating intentional harm." He also says the suspect "put himself in the area" of the attack.
Neighbors said Fuertas lived for her cats and she was known to go out late at night to buy cat food and feed neighborhood cats, earning her the nickname grandma and the 'cat lady.'
