NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – New York state's coronavirus infection rate hit its lowest level since the start of the pandemic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday as he announced the number of patients in intensive care had also reached a new low.

The infection rate was 0.78 percent, Cuomo said, with 515 out of the 65,812 people tested Saturday positive for the virus.

"It's great news," Cuomo said on a conference call with reporters Sunday morning. "We had the lowest one-day positive rate since we started."

"We are normally about 1, a little below, a little over. But 0.7 is the lowest rate since we've started," the governor said, adding that it was "really an incredible achievement."

The 515 new cases bring the state's total to 420,860.

There were seven more deaths reported Saturday. The death toll is now 25,202.

A total of 548 people were hospitalized with the virus statewide on Saturday, Cuomo said.

Of those hospitalized, 131 patients were in intensive care with the virus.

"That is the lowest number of people we've had in ICU units since this started," Cuomo said. "So that's also great news."
