NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An NYPD veteran has become the department's first Black female three-star chief.

Juanita Holmes, who joined the NYPD in 1987, was promoted to Chief of Collaborative Policing at a ceremony on Friday, the department said in a release.

Her promotion "is historic and makes (her) the highest ranking African-American female officer in New York City Police Department history," the release said, adding that "no other African-American woman has ever risen to the rank of three-star chief."

Holmes started her career on patrol in the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway, according to the release. Sixteen of her family members are NYPD employees, 14 of whom are uniformed members, including her son, the release said.

"I am both humbled and overwhelmed with emotion as I think of all of the women who came before me in this department," Holmes said in a statement. "Their struggle to be recognized, their struggle to succeed, their struggle to be heard, has culminated today in my appointment to this position."
