NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- NYU will resume in-person classes this fall, barring any "government health directives" that say otherwise, the school's provost said Tuesday.

In a letter sent out on Tuesday, Provost Katherine Fleming said students would return to campus for the fall semester, "both in New York and at our Global sites."

"I can't pretend that 2020-21 will be a typical academic year. We'll be living with safety measures and will have to be highly flexible so we can respond to a changing landscape," Fleming wrote.

"I can promise you, however, that our goal is to enable you to stay on track academically in a way that works best for you in the current context and that maximizes flexibility," she added. "We're committed to ensuring that all of our students receive the high-quality education that drew them to NYU, even though some students will likely be unable to make it to New York."

Students who live near a particular NYU campus will have the option of studying at that campus as part of a new "Go Local" option, Fleming noted.

"This option may include a combination of in-person and online classes and provide other services offered by the campus or global sites," she said. The deadline to apply for the "Go Local" option is July 1.

Students will also be able to spread out classes over the fall 2020, spring 2021 and summer 2021 semesters "without additional tuition costs," Fleming said.

Some courses or parts of courses will still only be offered remotely, while others will provide the option to participate either in-person or remotely, the email notes.

NYU will also make sure its campus spaces allow for social distancing, provide and and require masks, conduct COVID-19 and antibody testing, reduce student housing density and develop "more flexible formats for student life activities.

"No matter where or how you choose to study this fall, NYU will support you as you seek to meet your educational goals," Fleming said.
