NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The oldest woman in the U.S., Harlem resident Aleila Murphy, has died. She was 114.
"It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Mrs. Aleila Murphy," tweeted healthcare union 1199 SEIU Wednesday. "Mrs. Murphy was the oldest living American, having celebrated her 114th birthday in July, surrounded by her family, friends, community leaders, & members of our AFRAM Caucus."
The union said Murphy died on Saturday. Her daughter, Rose Green, is a retired member of the union.
Murphy was born in 1905 and had two children. Her husband died at an early age.
Murphy celebrated her 114th birthday at the Harlem State Office Building last July.
She became the oldest living American after Lessie Brown died in January in Ohio at the age of 114.
