
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio announced during his daily briefing on Tuesday, the city's plan to crack down on the fireworks displays occurring across the five boroughs.
A multi-agency task force will be created to stop the selling of illegal fireworks, the mayor explained.
"This is a real problem," de Blasio said. "It's not only illegal but dangerous."
The task force consists of 10 officers from NYPD Intelligence Bureau, 12 FDNY Fire Marshals, and 20 members of the Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
The city will start sting operations of undercover buys in New York City and surrounding states to try to track down the supplies of fireworks flowing into the city,
"This is a beginning, but there's a lot to do.," de Blasio said.
The mayor also announced that the city's Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular would go on as scheduled albeit different from past years.
There will be a series of five-minute shows that will take place in each of the five boroughs.
They will be "very brief bursts", de Blasio said. "Brief but mighty."
The shows will be held starting June 29, and end with a televised grand finale on July 4th.
He said that in order to avoid crowds, the city wouldn't announce the sites of the fireworks would not be announced until just before they happen.
De Blasio promised something "different but very special" with the Empire State Building as well.
