NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Officials have charged an off-duty correction officer in the fatal shooting of his uncle that occurred Wednesday night after a dispute inside a car on the Upper West Side.
EMS responded to the scene and discovered the 37-year-old with a gunshot wound to the torso.Gadsen ran off but returned to the scene where he was arrested.The other man in the car remained at the scene and was not arrested.
The victim was rushed to Mount Sinai Saint Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Police recovered Cardell's weapon but the motive for the shooting remains unknown.Cardell Gadsden, a corrections officer at Rikers Island, was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon."We are deeply troubled by these allegations and our condolences go out to the victim's family," Deputy Commissioner for Public Information Peter Thorne said. "An NYPD investigation is underway, and the officer has been suspended without pay pending the results of that investigation."
