NEW YORK (1010 WINS) Police say an Upstate New York man faked his own robbery and abduction because he couldn't pay off money he owed stemming from a Super Bowl pool.

Robert Brandel, 60, of North Tonawanda, was found by police tied up in his pickup truck in Newfane, outside Buffalo, on Monday.

He told the troopers that two men who were part of his Super Bowl squares pool grabbed him, took $16,000, and drove him around for two days, leaving him tied up in his truck in a parking lot.

Police say he had entered false names into a Super Bowl squares pool, in order to increase his chances of winning, but ended up not being able to afford his squares.

Brandel has been charged with fraud and falsely reporting an incident.
