NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man from Maryland was driving 100 miles per hour on West Street when he set off a fatal six-car crash last Saturday morning, prosecutors said. Sherman Harrison, 37, blew through at least three red lights before he slammed into a Honda CRV causing it to flip over and burst into flames, prosecutors said.
The driver of the CRV, 57-year-old Amy Phillipson, a FedEx driver, was killed. Harrison fled the scene with a Rottweiler that was in his car, police said. Officers also say they found a loaded gun in his Audi.Harrison, in a wheelchair, appeared in a video hearing from Bellevue Hospital. Prosecutors want him held without bail arguing his inexplicable recklessness resulted in an "entirely avoidable, tragic death of a woman who was on her way to work."
Harrison is due back in court Friday. He is facing charges including criminally-negligent homicide.
