Questions surround fifth-grader’s death in elementary school brawl

WALTERBORO, S.C. (1010 WINS) -- A South Carolina fifth-grader is dead after a fight inside an elementary school classroom in the town od Walterboro.

The girl was rushed to the hospital, barely holding on, and remained unresponsive. She died on Wednesday morning.

Her mother took to Facebook to share her grief, telling followers that her baby girl had 'gained her wings.'

The Colleton County school district released a statement saying the Raniya Wright was a wonderful student who loved to write and loved being a big sister.

"It has hit our community like a Cat 5 hurricane," an official said.

Parents want to know how deadly violence broke out in a classroom. One student has been suspended pending an investigation into the incident, officials said. It was not clear if that student was involved in the fight.
