NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Immigrant advocates are planning a series of rallies in the New York City area to show their opposition to raids planned by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement  over the weekend.

ICE plans to target thousands of undocumented immigrants in 10 major cities, including New York, with a focus on families.

A number of “Lights for Liberty” vigils will be held throughout the area.

One will be held in Foley Square in New York City Friday evening, with others in White Plains, Chappaqua, and Pleasantville in New York and Hoboken, New Brunswick, Jersey City, Atlantic City, Red Bank and Leonia in New Jersey.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a statement saying, “"There are multiple reports that the Trump Administration will launch its previously announced blitz of ICE raids across the country this Sunday, including here in New York. This shameful assault on families across the country will no doubt lead to further separations of children from their parents and 'collateral arrests' by ICE, where individuals with no orders of deportation will be detained.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said, “"In anticipation of the Trump Administration's threatened ICE raids, we are proactively reaching out to our immigrant communities to make sure they know we stand with them and are prepared to do whatever we can to protect them.”
