NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Got a city parking space? Get ready to pay more.
The city Department of Transportation is reportedly preparing to raise monthly and quarterly rates at 16 municipal garages and lots in the five boroughs.
CBS 2 reports that the biggest increase will be at a Lower East Side garage, where the monthly rate will go from $300 a month to $500.
That has some customers upset – and parking on the street.
The DOT says rates have been below the market rate for years and that they continue to be at every facility. The agency says some municipal lots have not seen price hikes in more than a decade.
Several City Council members are fighting the big increases, saying smaller hikes over time is better.
The rates will go up on July 1, according to CBS 2.
