PARIS (1010 WINS/AP) -- The Eiffel Tower closed down on Monday after a man began trying to scale the Paris monument.
A person could be seen dangling just below the third and highest level of the structure. A rescuer dressed in red was just above him.
Members of a special firefighter climbing unit and police negotiators eventually persuaded the man to surrender, a Paris police official said. The official said the man was "under control and out of danger" Monday night.
A Paris police spokeswoman said a team of firefighters including a climbing specialist was on the scene and in touch with the intruder, whose motivations were unclear.
Managers said the tower would reopen Tuesday morning as usual and promised to reimburse people with reserved tickets whose visits were thwarted.
The man reportedly began his climb on the Tower's second story.
