NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Rockland County Executive Ed Day, a Republican, is calling on the Trump administration to require foreign visitors to have proof of immunizations to measles to enter the country.
"This needs to be done, not tomorrow, not in a week, not in a month, and not in a year," said Day, "It must be done immediately. The numbers are gaining strength."
Day's letter to Trump states that, "We, and the 23 other states suffering through measles outbreaks, need your help. We have taken many steps locally to contain this outbreak, our policy from the start has been to maximize immunizations while minimizing exposures, and we have seen success,"
There have been 233 cases of measles in Rockland County since several infected people traveled from Israel to Rockland County back in October.
There are no current vaccination requirements for travelers into the country.
Day sent the letter to New York Sens. Charles Schuber and Kirsten Gillibrand as well as local U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey in addition to Trump.
The CDC reports there have been 880 confirmed cases of measles this year, most of which have been in the New York City metropolitan area.
