On Wednesday, we were ready to find out. Scientists from the 'Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration' have unveiled photos of a black hole, actually two black holes.
One is called Sagittarius-A at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
The other is at the center of a nearby galaxy known as M-87.
Both are thousands of light years from earth. The images look like glowing eyes.
Co-discoverer Jessica Dempsey said it is a vivid ring of light that reminds her of the powerful flaming eye of Sauron in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The results are being published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
