The To-Do List: Things to do (virtually) in NYC this weekend, April 24-26

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City's museums, theaters and other cultural institutions may be closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but there are still plenty of virtual activities happening this weekend. 

From happy-hour events to live performances, here are some of the virtual happenings taking place "around the city" on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 


Rockefeller Center's 'Happy Hour Art Party'

Rockefeller Center is hosting a "Happy Hour Art Party" every Friday, and this Friday is no exception. Party "guests" can send photos of people, pets or plants they're socially distancing with to @rockefellercenter on Instagram, and this week's happy hour host, illustrator Rebekka Dunlap, will draw them in real time. 

When: Friday, April 24, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Frick Collection's 'Cocktails with a Curator'

If you're looking for "the perfect mix of cocktails and art," this is the happy hour for you. Each week, a Frick curator discusses a different piece of art during a virtual, BYOB event on YouTube; this week, the museum's Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator, Xavier F. Salomon, will talk about Anthony van Dyck's "Sir John Suckling."

LaMaMa and CultureHub's weekly online live performance series

The East Village's LaMaMa Experimental Theatre Club has teamed up with CultureHub to host a "weekly online live performance series" called "Downtown Variety." This week's show will feature artists including Maura Nguyen Donohue, Rue Bainbridge, Mx. Oops, Peter Mark, eugene the poogene, Lola Giouse and Yarie Vazquez.

The Metropolitan Opera's At-Home Gala

Forty different artists from around the globe will live-stream performances from their homes as part of The Metropolitan Opera's "At-Home Gala" this Saturday. The Opera's General Manager Peter Gelb and Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin will be hosting.

Dorothy Parker's New York Virtual Tour

Author and editor Kevin C. Fitzpatrick of Big Apple Fanatics Tours hosts walking tours of writer Dorothy Parker's New York — and now, the tours have gone virtual via Zoom. A "walking tour without the walk," the tour will explore "the history of New York, its architecture and development, all tied into the life of Mrs. Parker.

When: Saturday, April 25, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Improv and sketch comedy shows at the Magnet Theater

The Magnet Theater in Chelsea has been live-streaming improv and sketch-comedy shows throughout the pandemic. Two shows will take place on Saturday — a comedy show with Brooklyn-based performer Fred Chong Rutherford in which he explores "friendship" and "grief," and an improv show called "The Armando Diaz Experience" that will feature monologist Will Clegg. 

When: Saturday, April 25, 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The Met's digital premiere of 'Black Rock Coalition: History of Our Future'

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is hosting the digital premiere of "Black Rock Coalition: History of Our Future" this weekend. Streaming on Facebook, YouTube and the Met's website, the performance will comprise "a sonic timeline honoring the Black pioneers who ushered rock and roll into the American collective consciousness."

The Brooklyn Public Library's poetry workshop

The Brooklyn Public Library is hosting weekly Zoom poetry workshops on Sundays. Writer and human rights professional Emily Sernaker will host this week's class; all of the workshops focus on "poets who find comfort in the midst of difficulty." An RSVP is required.

Artist Raul Barquet will teach a hand lettering and typography workshop "at" Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden on Sunday. Participants should come prepared with a large piece of paper, a black sharpie, a ruler, a pencil and an eraser. The class will stream on Facebook Live.
