NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) -- President Trump has delayed his plan to send ICE agents to New York and other cities to deport thousands of undocumented immigrants.
The president tweeted Saturday that he had delayed the plan at the request of Democrats. He warned that deportations would start in two weeks if lawmakers couldn't hammer out a solution on the border.
Officials had confirmed that ICE was set to launch raids in 10 U.S. cities Sunday – an operation that would target about 2,000 people. Other cities on the “family op” list included San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles.
Three administration officials told The Associated Press the operation had been canceled because details had leaked in the media and officer safety could be jeopardized. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly on the operation and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The operation would have targeted people with final orders of removal, including families whose immigration cases had been fast-tracked by judges.
Trump earlier this week tweeted that an operation was upcoming and said the agency would begin removing "millions" of people.
Gov. Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, AG Letitia James and other New York officials had vowed to fight back against the raids.
Immigration officials say more than 100,000 undocumented migrants were apprehended or turned away at the U.S.-Mexico border in April alone.
