The Wall Street Journal reports that the two companies are looking to team up to compensate drivers who are out of work because they caught the virus—an agreement that is expected this week.
Drivers are in a tough position if they fall ill or are quarantined because they likely don’t get paid time off. The plan would allow them to take time off if they exhibit symptoms and can’t work.
The reported plan comes a day after an Uber driver was hospitalized in Queens with the virus. According to Mayor Bill de Blasio, he’s a driver on Long Island.
Just last week Uber and Lyft said they would compensate drivers who were diagnosed or quarantined to encourage drivers to follow the orders of public health officials.
Drivers have expressed worry over the virus on social media, and app-based driver group Gig Workers Riders even created an online petition for drivers to get paid leave, according to the Wall Street Journal.
