NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – New video shows an NYPD captain and other officers being attacked as a clothing store is ransacked by looters in lower Manhattan on Tuesday night.
The video shows the officers attacked in the street as looters raided a Zara store at Fulton Street and Broadway in the Financial District at 9:15 p.m.
The NYPD captain is seen approaching two men outside the Zara before he is thrown to the ground.
Video shows him getting back up and swinging his helmet at a man wearing a backpack as officers in riot gear rush to his aid. Those officers are then caught up in the fray.
According to the New York Post, 21-year-old Juan Garcia and 18-year-old Fernando Lopez, both from the same address in Queens, were arrested.
Police told the Post that the two left Zara through a broken window after stealing merchandise moments before the confrontation.
The two face charges of assault, burglary and resisting arrest. Lopez also faces charges of criminal possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools.
The NYPD captain suffered an abrasion to his chin, police said.
The confrontation took place more than an hour after a curfew went into effect in New York City at 8 p.m. More than 200 people were arrested on Tuesday night alone amid ongoing unrest over the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police.
