NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Westchester County school district is planning to install special detectors that can spot e-cigarette smoke.
Officials in White Plains say detectors will be installed in undisclosed locations around schools in the district.
The detectors identify chemicals in the vapor produced by e-cigarettes.
A positive identification will trigger a silent alarm and alert administrators.
The New York Health Department recently released statistics that found 40 percent of seniors an 27 percent of students use e-cigarettes.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is currently attempting to push a statewide ban on flavored e-cigarettes.
