NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS) — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has apparently worn out his welcome at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he was arrested this morning.
London police say he was taken into custody at the central London police station, where he will remain until he goes in front of a magistrate’s court as soon as possible.
They say the Ecuadorian ambassador invited them into the embassy, which Assange has not left for over six years.
British police wanted Assange on a court warrent dating back to 2012 for skipping bail while he was under investigation for sexual assault and rape in Sweden .
Assange is Australian. He has said that if he was arrested, he would eventually be extradited to the U.S. to face charges.
WikiLeaks has repeatedly claimed that the Justice Department is building a criminal case centered on the leaking of Democratic emails in the 2016 election.
WikiLeaks has insisted it did not get those emails from the Russians.
