Worldwide COVID-19 death toll surpasses 250,000, data shows

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The worldwide COVID-19 death toll surpassed 250,000 on Monday, data compiled by Johns Hopkins University shows.

At least 251,059 people around the globe have now died of complications related to the novel coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins' COVID-19 Dashboard, which was last updated at 6:30 p.m. Monday. 

There were 3,578,301 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases as of Monday evening, including 1,178,906 in the U.S. — the country with the highest number of confirmed cases by far — 218,011 in Spain and 211,938 in Italy. 

New York City has been hit harder than any other place in the U.S., according to the data. 

As of Sunday evening, a total of 170,534 people in the five boroughs had tested positive for COVID-19, data released by the city's health department on Monday shows

The city on Monday also reported a total of 13,536 confirmed deaths and 5,373 probable deaths.
