Yankees president Randy Levine says he's open to Red Sox fan de Blasio throwing out first pitch, mayor responds he'd 'unquestionably be there'

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Yankees fans across the city are itching for the Bronx Bombers to return.

No one gets that more than Yankees president Randy Levine, who has been appointed to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's advisory board to reopen the state.

"I'm hopeful that we can get baseball going sooner rather than later," Levine told 1010 WINS Wednesday. "We're excited to see if we can get that going. You know, probably starting in all likelihood with no fans, with only appropriate mitigation, because health and safety to our players our employees our fans of the most paramount thing.

OK, so one would imagine that the city's mayor, Bill De Blasio, would be present at the Yankees' first game. After all, he'll be at the forefront of getting the city back to some semblance of normalcy. So for optics, it makes sense.

But de Blasio makes no apologies for being a rabid Boston Red Sox fan. When asked by 1010 WINS' Brigitte Quinn, "Randy, let's say we do get to play ball again and the Yankees, let me dream a little bit here, play a home opener in the Bronx - might you ask a certain Red Sox fan, Mayor de Blasio, to throw out the first pitch?"

Levine responded, "Well, I think he is a pretty diehard Red Sox fan, so I don't think he would do it. But -- he's always, as everybody is, always welcome at Yankee Stadium. Always."

De Blasio responded at his daily coronavirus briefing on Thursday, telling 1010 WINS reporter Juliet Papa that he'd be game to "celebrate with Yankees fans and Mets fans alike."

"I would love nothing more than to see baseball come back to New York City," the mayor said. "I would happily go to Yankee Stadium and be a part of that first game."

De Blasio didn't specifically say he'd throw the first pitch but did say he'd "unquestionably be there joyously with all other baseball fans."
