NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- With the nominees for the 31st annual IFP Gotham Awards announced Thursday, awards season is officially in full swing.
Leading the pack, with five nominations each, are "Passing" and "The Lost Daughter."

A literal black and white period piece, "Passing" chronicles the relationship between two women of color and their race. "The Lost Daughter," on the other hand, is a psychological drama about the obsession one woman develops after meeting a young mother and her daughter while on vacation.
Interestingly enough, both are the directorial debuts of actresses Rebecca Hall and Maggie Gyllenhaal, respectively. They were also acquired by Netflix earlier this year.
While both films are nominated in a variety of categories including Best Screenplay and Best Feature, the Apple TV+ film (and Sundance smash-hit) "CODA" scored the second highest number of nominations - three - in two separate acting categories. The film follows a child of deaf adults (CODA) who isn't deaf, and who feels guilty for wanting to follow her own dreams because it means leaving her family behind.
Indie darling Sean Baker's third film, the taboo "Red Rocket", also scored three nominations. The film follows a washed-up porn star as he returns to his hometown,
HBO's hit comedy series "The White Lotus," Questlove's directorial debut documentary "Summer of Soul (...or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)," and even Netflix's newest global phenomenon "Squid Game" also received some recognition.

The 31st annual IFP Gotham Awards ceremony will take place on Nov. 29 in-person in New York City at Cipriani Wall Street.
