NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Dustin Diamond, who played Samuel "Screech" Powers on the original "Saved By The Bell," died Monday morning, following a battle with cancer. He was 44.
“Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful,” the actor’s spokesman, Roger Paul, said in a statement.
Diamond, who starred on "Saved From The Bell" from 1989 to 1993, had carcinoma.
"Access Hollywood" host Mario Lopez, who co-starred with Diamond on "Saved By The Bell," tweeted a photo of the pair, writing, “Dustin, you will be missed, my man. The fragility of this life is something never to be taken for granted.”
Another co-star, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, called Diamond “a true comedic genius,” adding “I will miss those raw, brilliant sparks that only he was able to produce
Last month Diamond began undergoing chemotherapy treatments after being diagnosed with cancer, according to Paul.
After he was hospitalized n Florida, his team disclosed he had cancer.
“Dustin has completed his first round of chemo and his next round is being scheduled. He will also begin his physical therapy soon,” the actor’s spokesman, Roger Paul, said in a statement at the time.
“Dustin is looking forward to spending more time with his girlfriend, playing his bass guitar/video games, as well as making videos for his fans on social media,” Paul added.
