It remains unclear how or where the car entered the rushing waters of Niagara River. However, photos and videos from the scene showed the car almost completely submerged.

The vehicle was about 100 yards from the brink of the falls at Prospect Point, a prime viewing area, according to The Niagara Gazette.

Onlookers watched as emergency crews prepared to try to pull the vehicle from the water. A helicopter on scene was also seen attempting to rescue the vehicle’s driver.

Authorities at the scene revealed that the female operator of the vehicle was pronounced dead shortly after being pulled from the water. They noted that she was a local woman in her late 60s but did not reveal her identity.

The situation remained ongoing as of 3 p.m.
