1 person killed, 1 NYS trooper wounded in shootout on NY thruway

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/ WCBS 880 NEWS) – One person was fatally shot and one officer wounded following a shootout on I-87 in Hillburn, New York, according to officials.

State Troopers at around 2:55 p.m. stopped a car on I-87 in the Town of Ramapo that they say was identified as a 'Be On the Lookout' alert for a homicide case.


The suspect, who was the only person in the car, opened fire on the troopers, according to officials.

The troopers fired back, resulting in the suspect's death.

During the shootout, one trooper sustained minor injuries, while the other was unharmed.

Authorities have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public following this incident.

The investigation is currently ongoing.

Suffern Mayor Mike Curley confirmed the fatal shooting, which occurred after a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon near Exit 15B on the New York State Thruway.

During the traffic stop, officials say the driver of the vehicle opened fire on troopers, who returned fire striking the victim.

The driver was confirmed dead on the scene.

One trooper sustained minor injuries, and the other was unharmed.

Due to the ongoing police investigation, the southbound lanes on the I-87 are closed.
