26-Day-Old Baby Tests Positive for COVID-19 After Autopsy

A 26-day-old baby tested positive for coronavirus upon having an autopsy following her death.

The newborn girl was found unresponsive on Sunday in Pennsylvania, according to the Berks County Coroner, reported CNN.

She was taken to Reading Hospital and died shortly after being admitted.

An autopsy was performed on Monday and a COVID-19 test was administered. On Thursday, the results came back positive, according to WFMZ.

Acting Coroner John Hollenbach said the baby didn’t necessarily die due to the novel virus and her death is currently under investigation. There is no suspicion of foul play and toxicology results are pending.

The baby was tested for the virus because her aunt had previously tested positive for COVID-19. Hollenbach said the aunt had since been back at work for two weeks.

The baby’s parents were not tested prior to their daughter’s death, he told CNN.

According to People, if it is determined that the 26-day-old died due to coronavirus, she would be the youngest person in the state - and possibly the country - to succumb to COVID-19.

A 9-year-old girl has become the youngest person to die from coronavirus in Florida, according to state officials.

The girl, who was from Putnam County, passed away from the virus despite records showing that hers was not a travel-related case and she had not recently been in contact with anyone who tested positive, CNN reports.

Mary Garcia, Putnam County Health Officer, told the outlet that she was unaware of any underlying health issues in the girl’s case.

As of Friday, more than 4,122,100 people in the U.S. have tested positive for coronavirus, with at least 145,300 deaths, reported The New York Times.
