UNION TOWNSHIP, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Three correctional officers at a women's prison in New Jersey have been charged with "official misconduct" after inmates said they were beaten last month, the state attorney general's office announced Thursday.

At least six women at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility have said they were hurt Jan. 11, according to Gurbir Grewal.

One woman at the prison told NJ.com that she was sexually assaulted by an officer.

Others others reported they were severely beaten with one iinmate saying she she suffered a broken eye socket and cheek bone while another told her mother she was diagnosed with a concussion and had bruises all over her body.

Gov. Phil Murphy ordered an independent investigation into the incident with "findings of the investigation and recommendations will be released publicly," according to an email written by governor spokesman Jerrel Harvey.

Corrections Commissioner Marcus Hicks, said he "fully supports" the independent investigation but lawmakers are demanding that he lose his job amid allegations.

The "official misconduct" charge carries a minimum of five years in prison without additional charges could be added in the future as the investigation continues, state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said during a virtual press conference.
