Teaneck Police Chief Glenn M. O’Reilly said in a statement that the thieves were busted after receiving a report from an "alert resident" who saw "the group steal a package from their doorstep."

"With the help of a second alert resident, officers were provided with video of one of the suspects, as well as the suspect vehicle," he added.

The chief added that officers were patrolling the area when they came across the vehicle and pulled it over. Cops noticed what appeared to be stolen packages that had been opened on the passenger side of the car.

"The investigation further revealed that the trio had driven around the area scouting houses for packages that had been delivered," O’Reilly said.

According to O'Reilly, one of the teens would approach the house with an empty box from a previous theft to make sure it appeared "he was making a delivery." He would then exchange a delivered item for an empty box on the front steps.

The group, who are 17, 18 and 19, were found with "several thousand dollars’ worth of merchandise in their possession" from at least 11 homes in Teaneck, police said.

O’Reilly said all three were charged with third-degree theft.

The Teaneck Police Department said anyone who believes that their packages were stolen on Monday should contact them at 201-837-2600.
