TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A 3-year-old child died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Trenton on Wednesday, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
The toddler, whose identity has not been made public, accidentally fired the gun before noon at a home on the 1300 block of Princeton Avenue, officials said.
The child’s mother and an unidentified man were home at the time.
Emergency responders brought the 3-year-old to Capital Health Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.
It’s not yet clear who the gun belonged to, how the child got a hold on it or whether charges will be filed for the accidental shooting.
Police recovered the gun after the shooting.
“This horrific act calls to mind the senselessness of gun deaths and innocent children in harm's way,” said Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora. “The city grieves for the family's loss, and we ask you to keep them in your prayers.”
