RINGWOOD, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Four black bears were allegedly killed in a New Jersey town on Sunday, according to a report by NJ Advance.

The cubs’ death came as the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection hosted a meeting Tuesday to discuss whether to allow bear hunting across New Jersey as soon as next month.

On Sunday evening, Fish and Wildlife Conservation police officers received a complaint of four dead black bears in Ringwood, a spokesperson from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection told NJ Advance.

Since 2021, bear hunting has been illegal in New Jersey. Since 2018, the state banned killing of bears on New Jersey property where about 40% of bear deaths happened previously.

A vote during Tuesday’s meeting advanced a rule to allow bear hunting statewide in December in response to safety concerns over the growing bear population. The rule does not include cubs under 75 pounds as well as bears traveling in family packs with cubs below 75 pounds.

1010 WINS reached out to the New Jersey DEP for comment.
