NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — At least three people were injured Wednesday afternoon as firefighters continue battling a 5-alarm blaze at a Staten Island steel factory, officials said.

The fire was called in at around 2:30 p.m. is located at 60 Davidson Street near Mersereau Street in Mariners Harbor, according to the New York City Office of Emergency Management.


About 200 firefighters from 44 units responded to fight the flames that reached 5-alarms just before 3:30 p.m.

"The warehouse houses multiple different commercial occupancies. It quickly escalated to a 5-alarm. We have 44 Fire and EMS units on scene, that's about 200 Firefighters and EMS personnel. We have six tower ladders in operation. There were workers in the building, but they are all accounted for and there were no injuries to the workers," said FDNY Acting Chief of Department Thomas Richardson.

FDNY Assistant Chief Jonathan Pistilli released an update just before 6 p.m., saying that so far three injuries – two firefighters and one EMS member were reported.

All three were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Fire officials warned residents near the factory to avoid the smoke by closing the windows in their homes.

Billowing smoke could be seen at the scene.

Smoky conditions and traffic delays can be expected, officials said.
