PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Fifty-seven puppies and dogs rescued from a puppy mill in Missouri will soon be up for adoption at the North Shore Animal League of America.

"A lot of these animals are having firsts," said Ted Moriates, rescue team lead at NSALA. "It's their first time being loved — taken care of. It's their first time with a bed. It's their first time with a toy."

In about a week, the dogs will be ready to find their forever homes.

If it weren't for Moriates and his team, many of the dogs would have been put down since they can't breed or aren't perfect due to a disability.

He and his team spent seven days rescuing them.

"It's incredibly heartbreaking when you see something as beautiful as this little girl here, knowing that she would have been put down because of a little leg injury," Moriates said as he held a puppy.
