The trucks were en route to the Targets Closeout electronics store on Main Street near Broadway around 5:30 p.m. when the trucks collided and were flung off the road at the intersection of Broadway and Straight Street, according to authorities.
One truck was launched into the Golden Mango grocery store, and the other hit a tree.
The eight injured firefighters were brought to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson in stable condition, officials said.
Jerry Speziale, the director of police, fire and EMS for Paterson, wrote on Twitter that he was praying for the firefighters’ recovery.
“At Hospital with the Bishop, Chaplain-Monsgr, Union President, Fire Chief, Mayor and other firefighters praying for 8 who were injured earlier in a serious accident responding to the fire,” he wrote. “Paterson’s Bravest are amazing individuals. Praying for their speedy recovery.”
