The 18-year-old shooter, Payton Gendron of Conklin, also wounded three people. Four of the people he shot were employees. The rest were customers.

An Erie County Medical Center spokesperson said one of the surviving victims was discharged from the hospital on Saturday. The other two are in stable condition.

Gendron describes himself as a fascist, a white supremacist and an anti-Semite in a 180-page manifesto he released before live steaming the shooting.

The supermarket is in a predominantly Black neighborhood, and the manifesto made clear his intention was to target Black people. Eleven of the 13 victims are Black.

The FBI is investigating the shooting as both a hate crime and racially motivated violent extremism.

Gendron was arraigned later on Saturday, where he pled not guilty to murder charges.

The judge ordered he be held without bail. His next court date is Thursday.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said she’s on her way to Buffalo to assist with the response.

"I'm on my way to Buffalo to assist with the response to today’s shooting," she wrote on Twitter. "My heart breaks for the victims' families and for everyone impacted by this horrific and despicable act of violence."
