SAN FRANCISCO (1010 WINS) -- A 76-year-old Asian woman fought back earlier this week when a man attempted to attack her on a San Francisco street, sending him to the hospital.
Xiao Zhen Xie's alleged attacker, a man who appeared to be in his 30s, punched her in the face with no provocation as she waited to cross the street at a traffic light at Market Street and Charles J. Brenham Place at around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, KPIX 5 reported.
“You bum! Why did you hit me?” Xie yelled in a video shared on Twitter that shows the woman holding an ice pack to her eye and wielding a stick she apparently used against the attacker, who is seen handcuffed to a stretcher.
Xie told the outlet that her immediate instinct was to fight back.
“This bum, he hit me,” she continued, as she raised the stick. “He hit me — this bum!”
Police have yet to disclose a motive for the assault which comes amid a spike in anti-Asian attacks across the US.
The incident occurred a day after 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long allegedly shot and killed eight people including six Asian women at three spas in the Atlanta area.
