VIDEO: Cory Booker mocks 'defund the police' GOP amendment, internet goes wild

TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) — New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker went viral after praising a Republican colleague for bringing up an amendment against "defunding the police" during Tuesday's all-night Senate session ahead of the bipartisan $1 trillion infrastructure vote.

Republican Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville's proposed amendment would cut federal funding to municipalities that reduced funding for police departments.

“Opposing my amendment is a vote in support of Defunding the Police and against our men and women in blue,” said Tuberville.

In response to Tuberville's debated amendment, Booker relished at the thought of putting the political issue to bed by allowing Democrats to distance themselves with a vote, calling it "a gift" — even offering to hug the senator for raising the issue.

“There’s some people who said there are members of this deliberative body that want to defund the police to my horror, and now this senator has given us the gift that, finally once and for all, we can put to bed this scurrilous accusation,” Booker shouted.

The amendment passed 99-0, with all Democrats voting in favor. The Senate eventually voted 69-30 to pass the landmark infrastructure bill.

Social media was a buzz Wednesday in response to Booker's reaction, though some disapproved of his comments and his vote.
