SHOREHAM, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A 10-year-old boy took his parents’ SUV on a joyride through Suffolk County on Tuesday afternoon, driving for a half-hour before a tire blowout cut the adventure short, county police said.
The boy hopped in the Ford Expedition at his family’s home in Shoreham around 4 p.m. and took off.
He eventually made his way onto the William Floyd Parkway and headed south—with other motorists seemingly unaware of who was behind the wheel.
He ended up in Ridge, where the SUV blew a tire, police said.
According to cops, he managed to drive for 30 minutes without hitting any other vehicles.
He was not injured but was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
He won’t face charges thanks to a New York state law that went into effect last year.
Under the law, any child under 12 years old who commits a crime other than homicide is referred to their local services offices instead of being arrested.
