WANTAGH, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – A Bronx man was arrested after police say he struck an 8-year-old boy with a jet ski at Jones Beach State Park, allegedly while intoxicated, on Saturday evening.
The boy was swimming when he was struck by the watercraft near the Sloop Channel off Jones Beach Field 10 shortly before 7:30 p.m., Nassau County Police said.
Responding officers from the department’s Marine Bureau found the boy on the shoreline with members of the New York State Park Police.
The 8-year-old was airlifted to Cohen Children's Hospital in Queens with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Anthony DeJesus, 30, was later arrested and charged with operating a vessel while impaired by alcohol, operating a vessel while intoxicated, reckless operation of a vessel, and operating a person watercraft without a safety certificate.
The Daily News reported that DeJesus was riding a yellow 2020 Yamaha WaveRunner at the time of the crash and that he remained at the scene before he was arrested.
