HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A 19-year-old Tesla driver trying to swat away a bug led to a New Jersey crash on Sunday, police said.

Hackettstown police officers responded to Route 57 near Nikitin Way just before 2 p.m. on a report of a car crash.

Investigators determined that the driver from Washington Township was heading east on Route 57 when a bug started flying around his face.

When he tried to swat the bug away, he lost control and rear-ended a 2017 Honda driven by a 19-year-old woman, according to police.

The impact caused the woman, also from Washington Township, to crash into a guardrail.

Police said the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene. He was issued a summons for careless driving.

It wasn't clear if the woman suffered any injuries.

The Hackettstown Police Department offered tips in case other drivers are compelled to swat a bug while driving:

Keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. If you’re in heavy traffic, fight the urge to swat the insect away, you could swerve and put other drivers at risk
• Slow down gradually. Don’t slam on the brakes. Consider putting your hazard lights on to alert other drivers that you’ll be going below the speed limit.
If you can, pull over. Once you’ve come to a complete stop, go ahead and give your complete attention to shooing the bug out of your car.
