The Megabus flipped on its side on the Thomas Edison Service Area entrance ramp in Woodbridge Township just before 7 p.m.
Officials confirmed Wednesday that a second bus passenger had died. Another 14 passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and four others were left unharmed. Two passengers and the 56-year-old male bus driver sustained serious injuries.
A preliminary investigation said the bus driver "lost directional control of the bus" and struck a Ford-150 pickup. The impact caused the bus to go off the road to the right, striking a guardrail before overturning onto the service area entrance ramp.
Cheryl Johnson, 59, of the Bronx, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Cecilia Kiyanitza, 66, of Woodbury, New Jersey, was airlifted to a local hospital and pronounced dead, authorities said. No one was injured in the Ford.
The bus was coming from New York City and on its way to Philadelphia at the time.

There was a massive emergency response. Firefighters used the jaws of life as passengers crawled out of the roof hatches and windows. Bloody bus passengers stumbled along the highway and then rested on the grass as paramedics tended to their injuries.
Road crews worked overnight to clear the roadway and replace damaged guardrails.
The crash remains under investigation and there is no additional information at this time.
