HARTFORD, CT (1010 WINS) -- The number of Connecticut residents hospitalized with COVID-19 jumped by nearly 40 on Wednesday as Gov. Ned Lamont urged colleges and universities to help students get tested before they travel home for Thanksgiving.

As of Tuesday evening, 816 people in Connecticut were hospitalized with the virus, up by 39 from Monday, Lamont tweeted.

Of the 34,135 COVID-19 test results that came back in the state on Tuesday, 2,042, or 5.98 percent, were positive, he said.

The state also reported 13 new COVID-19-related fatalities, bringing its death toll to 4,784.

In a press release, Lamont said he and his fellow northeastern governors were encouraging colleges and universities in their states to provide COVID-19 testing for their students, to avoid Thanksgiving spread.

Students who test positive will be strongly encouraged to isolate on campus before they travel home, he noted.

"College students returning from highly infected states could accelerate the spread of COVID in Connecticut," he said in a statement.

"I appreciate the joint effort of all our regional governors to clearly state the testing/quarantine rules for returning home from college," he added.
