NEW HAVEN, Conn. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A school custodian confronted an armed man on school grounds and called the police in New Haven, Connecticut, on Wednesday morning.
Students were in classrooms around 10 a.m. when the custodian, whose identity has not been disclosed, arrived for work at Lincoln-Bassett Community School -- which is pre-k to eighth grade -- when he noticed the unidentified individual acting suspiciously.
He felt suspicious and called the police.
"He saw something was off, and he immediately reacted and contacted the police, and it was diffused very, very quickly," Assistant Superintendent Viviana Camacho said in a statement to News8.
The man, reported to be in mental distress and carrying a gun, was arrested by police within half an hour of the custodian's alert.
Families were informed of the incident afterward.
Camacho praised the custodian, "He's kind of like our local hero now."
The school is familiar with the individual, according to Camacho, but no further details about his identity or his motives have been released.
