LONG BEACH, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Long Island State Sen. Todd Kaminsky has announced his intention not to run for reelection.

Kaminsky, a Democrat, said in a statement on Wednesday that he would be leaving public service after 18 years.
"After much thought and consideration, I have decided that I will not run for reelection, or for any office, this fall," he said. "It has been an honor to represent the communities of the South Shore of Long Island for the past seven years, but I believe that it is the best thing for my family to pursue a new path."
He has represented the 9th District since May 2016, when his longtime predecessor, Republican Dean Skelos, was indicted and later convicted on bribery and extortion charges.
The 43-year-old previously served as an assistant federal prosecutor and as a state assemblyman.
Notably, Kaminsky's decision comes three months after his failed bid for Nassau County district attorney.
"I know I can look back proudly on the many accomplishments in which I was lucky to have played a part," he added.
He continued," Whether it was fighting on behalf of our planet and coastal communities by authoring and passing nation-leading environmental legislation; helping 9/11 first responders or [Hurricane] Sandy victims get the recognition they deserved; helping differently-abled students access a high school diploma; or just ensuring a constituent got her heat turned on or that unemployment check delivered, I am grateful to have been in a position to help make a difference."
