SPARTA TOWNSHIP, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Two bear attacks in the last week resulted in the death of a New Jersey dog and the injury of another, leading the Sparta Township Police Department to post a warning to residents on Thursday advising them to exercise caution when outside and to take necessary precautions against black bears.

Police said that both incidents occurred near West Mountain Road.

On Thursday, May 9, a bear attacked a resident’s dog on Graphic Boulevard, which resulted in the dog’s death. Four days later, a pet dog was attacked on Mountain Spring Drive, leaving the animal with serious injuries.

Police said that the department, with help from officials at NJ Fish and Wildlife, are investigating the attacks and will take appropriate measures to ensure public safety.

Residents near the bear encounters are encouraged to be cautious outdoors and take precautions, like securing garbage and food sources that could attract wildlife.

“Let’s talk about bears,” a promotional video by police posted to Facebook on Friday begins. The following slide includes a list of information for residents to protect themselves from attracting bears, and to protect themselves from a black bear encounter.

These tips tell locals to secure outdoor areas, avoid feeding bears, travel in groups while in bear country, understand bear behavior, know local regulations, follow safe bear practices while hiking and camping and more in-detail information.

“The Sparta Township Police Department will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary,” Chief Jeffrey McCarrick said. “We appreciate the community's cooperation and vigilance during this time.”

Anyone encountering an aggressive bear or wildlife is urged to contact the Sparta Township Police Department at 973-729-6121.
