NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A teenager is dead and another injured after a fight during a celebration for Mount Vernon High School’s basketball team turned fatal Friday afternoon, police said.

The high school athletes were being honored with a parade when police responded to the area of East Prospect and Gramatan Avenues just before 4 p.m. where they found two teenage girls with stab wounds.
One of the victims had non-life-threatening injuries while the other, a 16-year-old, was in critical condition and died en route to Jacobi Hospital.
“I am devastated and completely outraged. We began our day celebrating the greatness and success of our youth and we ended it with a young life that has been taken by senseless and inexcusable violence,” said Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard. “The mental, emotional and spiritual health of our community, especially of our children, must be the priority and we must come together.”
According to a message sent to families by Mount Vernon Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton obtained by Patch, students from Mount Vernon High School as well as Mount Vernon STEAM Academy and Denzel Washington School of the Arts were involved in the altercation that led to the stabbing, though Hamilton did not specify which school the deceased teen is from.
Counseling is being offered at Mount Vernon High School Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 11am to 2pm. Several other services, including grief counseling and community engagement, will also take place.
“As a community our common unity must be the safety and healthy development of our young people. Our heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to the family, friends and the entire community of Mount Vernon,” Howard said.
